RE: NEC-HE-shrine Yahoo Japan torture

From Paul England <xxxxxx@mail.utexas.edu>

I've only had kewl clerks in Akihabara, which is why I go back, despite the
high prices. They dont' bend over backwards or anything, but for the big
shops (even Medialand) if I ask if they have anything in the back that's not
on the shelf yet, they always look it up on their computer. In Japan, it
all comes down to the way you carry yourself. If you ask them in Japanese
like a French (or American or something) of course their not going to want
to help you -- it's still not 'Japanese' and would therefore require extra
work. Ask them like a Japanese, and 99 times out of 100 they'll help you.
I don't care how much you've studied Japanese, if you haven't lived here for
at least a year, you won't learn the culture good enough to speak the
language properly. You've gotta know when to bite your toungue and
apologize for something that's someone elses fault. I refused to do it when
I first started, and realized that it gets you knowhere. Fast.
