Yep...Naxat released the game in 1992 as Nexzr and in 1993 as Summer Carnival
'93: Nexzr Special. The second edition contains the "caravan" modes.
However, I like the game less than the other three Interstate/Kaneko PC
Engine games, Aeroblasters, Super Star Soldier, and Star Parodier (the other
three being for Hudson). I saw someone else posted a complementary note on
Sapphire...but I really can't for the life of me understand why. There are
so many shooters I'd recommend before that game. I picked up my Arcade Card
yesterday so I could see the difference it made in Popful Mail (don't
ask...I'm torn between houses), so I played a little Sapphire also. I do it
occasionally to see if I'm warming to the game over time. I'm not. Yes,
there are some "neat-o" special effects and digitization and stuff like that
(I like the headlight myself), but the game itself is rather drab. I would
have rather seen an established developer who could manipulate the hardware
well...like the aforementioned Interstate/Kaneko or Red...take the Arcade
Card and create a shooter with it. I find myself playing older games like
Daisenpu Custom and Sidearms Special before dragging Sapphire out. Maybe
it's just me, but I'm not impressed; it's certainly not worth $400. To each
his own, I suppose. We have a guy over on Shmups who loves the hell out of
Task Force Harrier EX on Genesis, much to everyone's disbelief. That's
pretty bottom of the barrel.
