Hey, Steve. A good majority of Saturn shooters are BETTER than those...that
is, of course, if your focus is not on polygons. Right this sec, I'm only
missing one 2D shooter on Saturn...Time Bokan. Hopefully, I'll have good
news by the end of the weekend that I don't have to look any longer.
Although there are many turds in there (Planet Joker, Terra Cresta 3D, Skull
Fang, etc.), there are several games which really are special (Battle
Garegga, Soukyugurentai, Radiant Silvergun, etc.). A lot of the stuff is on
both systems, so there is a tug back and forth on which system has the
superior version, but generally it goes in favor of Saturn just from a
capabilities standpoint...a good case in point can be seen when you compare
the two versions of Thunder Force V. However, in some cases...like the
Konami packs...there isn't much difference at all...maybe a little slowdown
here and there...no biggie. Although people rag on how RayStorm isn't as
good on Saturn (Layer Section II), it is a pretty amazing technical feat and
is a closer port than one would think would be possible. But...G-Darius?
Ick. I'd rather pop Darius II into my Saturn and play it. On the Irem side,
not many Irem shooters made the port to Saturn...only three: Xmultiply,
Image Fight, and In the Hunt. No R-Type, which is just as well...I really
can't stand the play mechanics. I like stuff a bit faster-paced and less
methodical. I digress...but I really recommend you get a Saturn...a lot of
good games on it which, unfortunately, are getting more expensive by the day
it seems. It's really an enthusiast's system...not a mass market
dominator...so the games you'll find on it sometimes aren't so mainstream.
But there is nothing wrong with that...PC Engine's the same way.
