>I'm just now starting to enjoy shooters...
Y'know, I'm not really afraid to admit it either. Back in the days when the
duo was still alive, I bought Lords of Thunder and Cotton, but I wouldn't
say that I really understood shooters until at least '97 or '98. I was just
too young back in those days. I realized that shooters had good action, and
I appreciated the good graphics and music in GoT and LoT, but I would just
play through them one time on normal mode and just kinda say, "well that
was fun," and leave it at that.
What I didn't understand is that shooters are intended to be played silly
until they are mastered. This is when a shooter really becomes addictive.
I've only recently finished GoT on devil mode and the "second quest" of
Cotton. When you really like a shooter, you should get numerous hours of
playtime from them playing the game over and over until you finally
(hopefully it will eventually happen) master the game's ultimate challenge.
Even after that, the game should still have some significant occasional
replay value.
Over the years I've played tons of shooters for the PCE, Genesis, Neo Geo,
and others, and there really is nothing quite like the feeling you get from
a well-designed shooter.
On a side note, anybody else notice that PC gamers lately have been trying
to steal our word? People are calling "1st person shooters" like Quake and
Half Life "shooters". They said it on that show "Game Spot TV" shown on
TechTV several times. We had that word first. That's our word! Oh well... I
guess it just means different things in different circles.
