I feel I must respond by saying that your anology of NEC overtaking
the industry with the PC Engine (at least in Japan, although they
never really "overtook it" in the same way that Sony has) is at least
partly true, in the fact that NEC was indeed an electronics company,
and not a gaming company, however, do not forget that Hudson was an
integral part of the PCE/TurboGrafx, & the PC-FX both in its hardware,
and software design,(with such innovations as the HuCard and the
Hu6280 processor) and worked in conjunction with NEC throughout the
life of all of the NEC-HE systems. Hudson is without a doubt a gaming
company, and NEC was much more a player in the gaming world than Sony
ever was through its arm NEC Home Electronics (now defunct as we all
know, sadly) and also had the software publishing companies NEC
Interchannel, and the now infamous NEC Avenue! NEC used its
innovations in the computer electronics world (particularly in the
monitor and laptop arena) to create such marvels as the GT, LT, and
Duo monitors. This type of innovation is what makes the NEC-HE
systems unique among anything else IMHO. What innovations has Sony
contributed to the gaming world? Not even a portable, sheesh! I
apologize to all Sonyheads for ragging on the PSX, and well, lemme
think of one nice positive thing to say about the PSX, ummm, well
quantity. There are ALOT of PSX games to choose from. I was recently
at my local EB and took note of the library of games available for
the PSX, practically the entire store, with just about a foot and a
half of space left for the DC and N64. I took special note of the
many old arcade titles for the PSX, such as the all time greatest
Atari classics, Midway arcade classics, Namco museum etc..... (these
are my fav genre)
