I have a little Japanese dictionary I keep at my side from time to time; however, I mostly like to bumble my way through games...don't get stuck that much. After doing import games for 8 of my over 10 years of console gaming...and a lot of RPGs in there...it's weird...you sort of develop this extra sense about things...even if you do get lost from time to time. The worst part about RPGs are the menus...if you can figure them out...you're set. And, if you get stuck and can't advance the story, just talk to people again. For developing good menu negotiation skills, practice with the Tengai Makyo games...haha. It's my goal to at least develop good Japanese reading skills before I die...so I guess that's my long-term goal. As far as walkthroughs on the Net, I don't advocate them because they hamper exploration. I think that it was Dave Halverson who said there was nothing like conquering an RPG in another language; I tend to agree. For nothing else, it forces you to think.!
..use that brain a little. Adds
to the fun of it...however, some people balk at that. When I get the time, I'm currently plowing through Eternal Arcadia on DC...among other games. Fun stuff. I could easily go out and buy the American version, but why would I want to mess up my collection with that ugly US CD case? Heh. Anyway, the point I've made is that I'm playing the Japanese rev and having NO problems. I thought I was at the four-headed creature...but the problem was that I didn't initially realize the thing was invincible. Shortly thereafter, I put my calm head back on...with the comfort that I truly WAS NOT reverting into a Net lamer. As far as Eldorado Gate goes, I'm still on the first disk...my time has become quite limited...so I'm all backed up. Raising a 2-year-old hampers the gaming hours to the point they are minutes. And it's much easier to pull out a shmup or action game for those few precious minutes than get involved in a something lengthy chain of RPG battles. I was home yesterd!
ay with Jacob (he was sick) and
I attempted to play some Final Fantasy IX (with texture smoothing on...heh) when he was asleep, but he kept waking up in the middle of battles and I ended up dying a few times...without saving...ack. So, I just pulled out GigaWing 2 and worked on my technique and high scores. Much easier...and a heck of a lot less frustrating.
