I had the same thing, I bought a broken duo for $30.00... I was toolazy to
take a look at it, so I just sent it into Turbo Zone Direct, and they
replaced the system for $50.00. The $50.00 replaces the System, the AC
Adaptor, and the AV Cables and covers return Shipping! Not a bad idea.

Subject: [NEC_Avenue] Repairing A Duo
Hi everybody, Mack here.
About a year ago I purchased a semi-broken Duo for parts from a guy for
$20.. Now the reason that I say semi-broken is, because when I bought it, he
made it clear to me that the CD-ROM drive did not work, but the Hucard port
did. So I was fine with that due to the fact that the hucard game port was
operable and I was getting a spare: Duo controller, A/V hook-up cable and
A/C adapter, well worth the $20. So I brought the system home and decided to
test the CD-ROM drive anyway. Well as luck would have it, when I fired it up
for the first time, it worked! What a steal! I'm guessing that the reason
that it worked again was because of any vibration that the system might have
encountered during transit it somehow "fixed" whatever was wrong, such as a
loose wire or something. So, I decided to play my most recent acquisition at
that time, and that was Ys III. Well as it turned out, a week or so later,
about half way through the game, the CD drive decided to stop working again
:^( Being that I was not finished playing Ys III yet I was rather pissed
off, even though I new when I bought it, that it was damaged. I kept getting
a message on the screen saying to "please set disc". Well, it was set! Why
doesn't it know that, I kept asking myself (and the Duo) :^) So like I said
I was kinda pissed off at it so I gave the system a few smacks, nothing
still. So I lifted the front only of the system about an inch, and then
dropped it back onto the shelf that it was on. IT WORKED! Not a big impact
mind you, but not something that I wanted to do every time the system
"conked" out on me. Well sure enough a day or so later it happened again,
"please set disc" ARGH! So I tried lifting the front of the system again and
dropping it onto the shelf. This time it didn't work and I didn't want to
get in the habit of dropping it over and over and over in fear of REALLY
screwing it up permanently! So I decided to store it away until I could land
one of those EXPENSIVE 4.5 mm external line head security device bits,
thinking that I would someday be able to open it up and hopefully fix
whatever is wrong with it. Well that day has finally come as I have recently
purchased one off of eBay for $7 including shipping. A little pricey for one
small bit but, if I can fix my poor Duo it will be well worth the price! Ok,
so I opened it up hoping to find a loose wire or anything that looked out of
the ordinary and of course, nothing that I could see. Now the laser is
operating as it does go up and down attempting to read the CD but after
about 3 attempts it gives me the same message "please set disc" So now I
have hit a roadblock and was hoping that maybe someone here at NEC_AVENUE
has also had this problem before and was successful in fixing it. Any
suggestions or advice would be REALLY APPRECIATED.
Thanks in advance,
Mack
