Wow...couldn't have said it better myself. I'm sure Dylan is smiling
also. There is NOTHING like a great shooter...at least to me.
They've been pretty much my gaming focus for the last nine years or
so, and I own 242 of them for various systems. That's pretty
excessive, I suppose. I'm also glad to see Paul warming to them over
time...I think the only shooter you liked a long time ago was Steam
Heart's for PC Engine, wasn't it Paul? The game which turned me to
them was Thunder Force III in 1990, but Gate of Thunder sent me over
the edge in 1992. After that, it was all downhill, including a heavy
binge attempting to get the complete Saturn shooter collection before
Eric Mylonas over at GameFan...we actually both completed the sets
around the same time. Thanks to a certain Shriner for making that
happen. Despite the rather weak offerings nowadays (though GigaWing
2 is quite nice on Dreamcast), it will always be great to go back,
pull out some PC Engine shmups, and relive some fond old memories.
As far as the first-person shooter thing, I, too, saw that Game Spot
TV dork talking about "shooters." Eeek. I guess that makes Deer
Hunter a "shooter" also? Takes all kinds, but at least I've seen
some really positive innovation over the years in my genre of
choice...I can't say the same of the FPS. I always get bashed by
some Half-Life nut when I say stuff like this, so I'd better be
quiet. Anyway, Paul, I saw your posting over on the TurboGrafx
Network (ack) about Fray. Thought you were finished with the game by
now. My save file is still on my Duo...but my Duo is in Virginia
with my folks until I can rejoin it. I rightly can't say if I
stopped my game before or after the point you got stuck. Regardless,
you need to stick a boot up that guy's arse over there who replied
back to you.
