I wonder if any other people in here have had the chance to play the
newest Bonk game? I played it yesterday and was pleasantly
surprised! It was pretty good, and Hudson seems to have taken alot
of care with this latest version of Bonk. Of course it is in
Japanese, so I don't understand everything that the game is capable
of doing, but hopefully, some others have played it and can offer
some advice. I got as far as the underground pyramids, and I can't
seem to get past this stage, even after killing everything, going to
all of the secret rooms, and have 10 lives and 113,000 points. I
can't remember this stage in the original game. It is worth getting
if only for the restylized characters, and reved up tunes. All of the
original music and characters are there, but kinda modernized, and
the result was actually pretty good, and I was skeptical to say the
least. Any fan of the original Bonk's Adventure must have a copy of
this, if only for a trip back to 1989 and their first TG-16
experience! Some details of the game, and differences:
Bonk blasts out of the sun towards Bonk Island and crashes like a pre-
historic meteor in the opening sequence.
Bonk can move and jump, head-butt, spin, etc. pretty much like the
original game, but of course I had to get used to doing the moves on
the PS2 controller, which is laid out differently than the Turbo Pad.
One of the main differences here is that Bonk jumps higher and longer
by just holding down the jump button a little longer, in certain
situations, whereas in the original Bonk would have to chew his way
up, or find a flower sprung floret, and he does this in the new
version as well, but less.
When Bonk eats the big meat, he shoots off laser beams of flames, and
destroys everything he touches just like before, but as the time runs
out, he turns into a monkey! Also he turns into the monkey if he eats
the small meat.
The bosses are the same ones... but different! I really had a good
laugh upon seeing the updated bosses!
The backgrounds and scenery are really cool too, they are very much
the same as before, but it's kind of like being in a Hallmark card
now with alot of cool texturing effects added.
The music is where this game really shines. They took many of the
annoying MIDI tunes and jazzed them up, so they actually aren't
annoying anymore but kinda fun to liten too while your playing.
Bonk actually speaks in this version too when he loses all of his
heart lives, and is a little more animated, dancing around and stuff.
For those that are interested in getting a copy of this game,
National Console Support is where I got mine, but probably any import
shop will have this one.
