Actually I found a good explanation for what they are on the web.
Apparently Umininn is one of three of these (mythical?) Japanese (spirits?)
Umininn is the blue one (that I guess we are all most familiar with from the games)
and it is associated with water and the sea.
Yamaninn is another one, that is green and is associated with mountains, and
Tananinn is pink and is associated with valleys.
Don't ask me why, I have no clue, it is some sort of Japanese lore, but really
interesting none the less. They seem to be a cottage industry in Japan as well, with
every conceivable merchandise being made from them!
