Yes, but there was one thing Doom had that _really_ made it stand out --
the deathmatch mode. Not only were the weapons, level design, graphics,
etc. better than W3D, but you could _blow up your friends_ as well.
Not that kill-your-friends shooters began there -- Spacewar comes to mind
decades before, or perhaps Hunt on DECstations and VAXen and other Unix
boxes in the 80's -- but this was the first FPS with a solid network/modem
capability, and that made all the difference in the world for the genre.
It was also probably the biggest shareware success story in the gaming world
ever (or up to that point, at least).
