"16-bit" contemporaries? Time to look at those system specs again. Don't
agree with Turrican (better on Super Nintendo) and Bomberman (again, better
specifically on Super Famicom because Super Bomberman 3, 4, and 5 are really
great games). Then again, are you talking stuff that came out only in the US
or on both sides of the pond? The Super Famicom specifically had games from
series like Emerald Dragon, Dragon Knight, Shubibinman, Xak, and Dragon
Slayer...which also reared their heads on the PC Engine. If I had to pick my
"Top 5" franchises which were better on PC Engine, though, I would choose the
following:
Castlevania - a popular answer, I know...however, it slaughters Bloodlines on
Genesis and Super Castlevania IV on SNES. The second SNES game I don't even
acknowledge, although for some odd reason I own it.
Cosmic Fantasy - with the only competition being Cosmic Fantasy Stories on
Mega CD, a pretty easy choice
Tengai Makyo - only competition being on the SFC and Neo Geo here. Manjimaru
and Kabuki Den are two of my favorite RPGs. Ziria is quite ancient, though.
Valis - also on SFC (1 game) and Mega Drive (3 games). One could say that,
for instance, Valis III on Mega Drive added parallax. Who cares. The heart
and the soul of the series was on the PCE.
Ys - III sucks on every system, but Book I & II and IV fare better in my
opinion than IV and V on SFC (personal taste)

There goes all of my shooter choices...ack. Too restrictive, Lou...because
for the most part, you can pigeon-hole most any game into a certain category
that existed before which a game took inspiration from. However, one game I
do enjoy which I've never played a similar game on any system or computer
before is Atlus' Mesopotamia (Somer Assault). Unless, of course, you
consider the Slinky which I played with as a kid to be the inspiration.
However, my Slinky didn't have gun turrets.
