Greetings all,
A public service announcement!
Many times when I read the digest of the the Turbo List or check out
places selling Japanese stuff, I see the Memory Base 128 listed for at
$50+ and this is quite disturbing because in Japan they are usually
sold for about $5-$10 and the unit is not very useful. In order to
properly use the thing, two things are required: 4 AA batteries and a
game that can access it. There are not that many games like this
though, and if you don't have any, then you can not use it at all. Then
the battery issue kicks in if you can use the device. Batteries don't
seem to last all that long, and once they die so does all the stuff you
have saved to it. Technically you could buy a second PC Engine to leave
turned on all the time to avoid the use of batteries since the Memory
Base 128 does store up enough power to stay on about five seconds after
the PC Engine is turned off, but is all that worth it?
So rather than waste money on a Memory Base 128, get a Ten no Koe
Bank. This HuCard holds 4 internal memories and it is quick and easy to
use. Plus there is a nifty trick if the forth box is empty to get some
super saves from popular games out when it was released.
Now if you absolutely must have a Memory Base 128, I recommend
Vasteel 2 for using it to backup your extra data. The 60+ internal
memories are nice if you have a lot of memory eating saves, but not
nearly as quick and safe as the 4 in the Ten no Koe Bank.
Hope this helps,
Loc
