Curious Qustions, OT

Hey Listers,

While picking up a game for a fellow list member at the flea market today,
one of my 'regular' sellers that I shop at had some nintendo games that I
scooped
up. In the process of sorting through them, I noticed two of them had no top
side labels. Thinking they had worn off, i pulled them out to look at the
flat side, and what I saw was quite the surprise; microchips!

For reference while I describe them, the pictures are here ->
http://pages.prodigy.net/dangerboy-gamerave/nescarts.jpg

The shells are normal nes, nintendo brand, but they have two holes cut out
on the 'tread' area, one horizontal and one vertical. The chips have the
labels "Young Indy, 7-10-92, CHR", and "Goal II,7-14-92 CHR, with the other
labels having PRG instead of the CHR. The holes that the chips pop up
through are very clean cut, and there's no sign of label removal where there
should be one on a retail cart.
The backs have a real generic-right-off-the-printer label that simply says
the game's name and Jaleco, the company that made the games.

The carts can not be played on the original system because the chips jut out
to
high, and they won't work on the remodeled system because the bottom chip is
too low. I'm going to take the lid off my original system to see if I can
slide
the cart in through the top of the carraige.

My question is this: Are these illegal copies, or are these the review
copies / beta copies / etc that Jaleco would have sent to a game magazine
for review? And what do the PRG/CHR abbrevations mean? Program and
Characters?
Anyone with help, please let me know. I'm very, very curious to see what I
have found. =)

Thanks!
Jason
