I'm not quite sure I understand the question entirely, but are you
referring to the CD-ROM attachment for a Turbo Grafx? If that's the case,
then yes, I believe you can play a handful of "normal" Turbo CD games without
a card. Games like Fighting Street, It Came From the Desert, Y's Book 1 & 2
and a handful of others that came out before the Super System Cards were
released. NEC then released another card named the "Arcade System Card" in
Japan that a handful of fighting games and Police Women Sapphire are
compatible with.
The way I understand it, the Super System Card adds more RAM to the Turbo
CD as well as creates a few extra programming instructions that can speed up
gameplay for SCD games. It's also compatible with a larger assortment of
colors as well I believe. The Arcade System Card was largely important
because it added even more RAM than the Super System Card... I'm not sure if
it added anything else to the mix.
Perhaps someone on the list with more of a technical knowledge of the
Turbo could fill us in a little more.
