RE: OT: Re: Sony's entrance into gaming (was:reading material)

I agree entirely with your statements. If the CD add-on was built for the
SNES, it would have had even a longer lifespan and we might have seen some
great games with CD quility audio tracks. Wouldn't that have been great. I
could play Chrono Trigger with video clips and digital audio. The problem
with all of Nintendo's games have always been the size. The cartridge sure
does load faster and play smoother but the games themselves seem to lack
things like good video and digital quality audio. A CD can store 640MB
whereas the largest N64 game (not even talking SNES anymore) made to date is
512Mbit which is 64MB. Plus CD's are cheaper. CD piracy sure is easy
compared to cartridge piracy so that might have been a deterant for
Nintendo. As far as Sony goes, they'll get theirs when the X-Box comes out.
Who wouldn't develop for Microsoft? It's not like they'll ever be in
financial trouble anytime soon. The only roadblock for developers that I
see is if Microsoft charges huge amounts for the production of games by 3rd
parties. I'm not too familiar with the insides of the X-Box but if it is
anything close to a PC, then we should see some great PC game ports in a
relatively short amount of time.

I have to give NEC a whole bunch of credit for being the first system to
release a CD addon. One of my friends had the CD addon for his TG16 and
when I saw a game one it I was in shock. I can't remember what game it was
but the graphics were amazing. I was used to playing NES games and here was
this digital audio game with amazing cutscenes. I just about needed to
change my pants :)
