Matt and I have been in an email dialogue for the past hour or so on
this matter and I distinctly remember the Photoshop postings to the
Tribes bulletin board that started the madness which later became the
All Your Base shockwave flash movie (after fusing it with the
earlier-made song mix from the game soundtrack).
I couldn't remember how I specifically found the bb but I found links to
it, and to the entire timeline of the Zero Wing saga here:
http://www.allyourbasearebelongtous.com
In essence, http://www.overclocked.com got part of the humorous ball
rolling when they made a Quicktime movie of the Zero Wing cinema with
the lines sung by Wayne Newton. Don't ask me how they managed that, as
when I visit overclocked.com now the link to the movie seems to be dead,
but at any rate all they were doing was putting song words to the
already existing English text from the PAL MegaDrive game. Yes, the
broken Engrish exists and it's in that version, and hence the ROM you
see floating about isn't a hack job, also evidenced by the site's
timeline and other information.
On a related note: anybody got ANY version of Zero Wing for sale? PAL MD
version would be appreciated but I'd also like to grab the PC Engine
one, and guys... get ahold of Cobra 2 if you don't have it already. It's
a digital comic format similar to Snatcher, much simpler, and mostly
Japanese, but the intro is English the likes of which makes my entire
skull hurt from laughing so hard.
