>Volume 6 (the final one) should be the most polished of the bunch (but I
>confess that I haven't spent much time exploring my copies). It contains:
>"Original RPG: Jangken & Fairies"
>"AVG: Frag no koku (country) no Alice"
>"Animation game: Quest Special"
>"Simulation: mizu tama no hen ai mo you kou za" (hard kanji title)
>"PC Engine Soft '92 Vol. 6 (catalog)"
>"Sports (racing): Doki Doki Drive Land"
>"UB Art Gallery"
>"UB Information"
I used to have Ultra Box 6 a while back (traded it to Bill Zandrew).
It wasn't really all that fun, but as a novelty, it's kind of neat to have,
and posesses a sort of homebrew wackiness that's sort of amusing to explore.
My impression of it was that it reminded me of a PCE Shareware
collection. The stuff inside was about that quality, maybe less so.
As I remember it, the different selections are:
Jangken & Fairies - a sort of basic Dragon Quest-style RPG. Not being one
for playing RPGs in Japanese, I didn't try it much. As Dave says,
it did seem the most polished of the lot.
Flag no Kuni no Alice - (kun-yomi for that kanji is "kuni") AKA Alice in
Flagland. It's a Zork-style adventure game involving Alice and a
psychadelic hip-hopping rabbit (the rabbit has a giant clock necklace).
The most fun part of the whole thing is the title screen, which
features some nutty breakdancing characters and a weird rap song.
It's very weird; I think I spent more time on this one than any of
the other selections just 'cause of the trippiness.
Quest Special - A very boring digi-comic thing. I seem to remember that
this was more of a demo than anything.
Simulation thingemabob - A basic dating sim. I managed to get a little
ways into it, but then I told the girl "hoteru e ikou" and she
slapped me.
PCE Soft catalog - a hypertext catalog of PCE games available at the time.
Kinda fun but outdated.
Doki Doki Driveland - a [very] poor man's Moto Roader.
UB Arts Gallery - Shows a few pictures. I remember them being a little
vulgar...
UB Information - This is kinda cool. Different PCE developers are
showcased, and you get to hear somebody from each company give a
little speech to promote their company, along with a goofy picture.
PCE afficionados will recognise many of their favourite companies,
such as IGS, Coconuts, Tengen, Telenet, etc.
And that's UB6 for you.
