Yay, get stuck offline for 1.5 weeks because of work and just watch the
email pile up... Heh, still wading through, but I wantedto comment on a
few topic threads that I saw pass through.
1) Nintendo and the Turbo.
Nintendo's iron-clad exclusivity clauses during the 8-bit days kept a
*lot* of developers off of the Turbo in the US. There were many games that
could have easily been ported to the Turbo and ran just as well (if not
better) but Nintendo was a big factor in this not happening.
2) Dracula-X in the US
Konami, as a company, is very protective of its titles and pretty much
refuses to let anyone else bring them to any system (with the notable
exception of the MS PC publishing deal). If Konami US doesn't release a
game in the US that Konami Japan developer then it won't get a US
release. TTI wanted to port Dracula-X but Konami refused to license it.
3) Mortal Kombat on the Turbo
This was proposed by Acclaim, not Midway. Acclaim wanted to released MK on
the Turbo first with a period of "exclusive" release in return for a chunk
of money. When Acclaim was turned down it did the dual Genesis/SNES
release. This was not a rumor and has been confirmed to me by more than
one Acclaim employee over the years.
4) Virtual Hampster on the 32X
Programming was begun on this game, but never completed. A few of the 32X
EEPROM carts did make their way out of Sega and are currently in collector
hands. Sonic X-Treme and X-Men2 were also halted in development. I've
never seen Sonic X-Treme code outside of Sega, but the X-Men carts have
appeared.
