I have to humbly disagree. Despite the head start Sega had with the 
Genesis, the SNES debuted and immediately was a contender. Both the Genesis 
and the SNES thrived during the 16-bit heyday, so I don't really see how 
you can say that Nintendo "stumbled" with the SNES. I happen to believe 
that the SNES is one of the best systems as far as its volume of quality 
software is concerned.

On this particular point I happen to agree with you. The Sega CD was 
overhyped and was, ultimately, a very poor system, despite having a handful 
of excellent games (Popful Mail and Sonic CD come to mind).
