Re: Super Darius (and shooters and Martial Champion)

Most of the good'uns have already been mentioned, but to add my two cents:

Although it's not for everybody, the TG-CD "Super Darius" captures the feel
of the original arcade better than any other home port (short of playing it
full-width on a PC using RAINE). It's hard as heck, but still one of my
faves.

In defense of "Sylphia", it's a really nice SCD vertical shooter. You're a
fairy instead of a mecha-suit, but if you can't find a copy of Spriggan (it
was rare 10 years ago-- good luck NOW), this is a really good alternate
that's far more attainable.

A couple JHu shooters that stand out are the horizontal "Coryoon" (see my
review on the listserv) and the vertical "Override". The latter is a bit
too easy if you use the red "homing donuts" weapon, but both of these have
some pretty awesome music (for a HuCard).

Oh yeah, the original "Martial Champions" arcade game only had three
buttons, so a 6-button controller won't buy you anything for the SCD
version. A 3-button controller might be more "ergonomic", but not a
functional necessity. The *HUGE* sprites (this was pre-Marvel.vs.Capcom,
remember) are what made this a standout 2D fighter in the arcades; I
*really* wish they'd done it right and made it an ACD game instead of SCD.
sigh.
