Well, with my Dreamcast out of commission for a few days, I have jumped
head first into some PC-FX games. Blue Breaker is a cool little
game! Any opinions of it out there? Anyone beat it? HEre is what I
think so far...
The colors are very good. Some parts really show off some
color. One dungeon in particular reminded me of the first Rayman. The
characters (during the battle scenes) look an awful lot like the Albert
Odyssey characters) are cute and have some nice little animations. The
artwork is good but the animation artwork is not quite as good though, the
animation itself is so clean. Man, the PC-FX really did have the best
video capabilities; certainly better than the Saturn and Playstation and
3DO, that's for sure. When the character appear on your screen to speak
with you they have very cool and fluid animations which is another nice
touch.
As a quick aside, was there ever a video card to allow video CDs to be
played on the PC-FX?
The music is mostly PCM. While it is well written, it is also a
reminder of the PC-FX's relatively weak sound card. It isn't too
annoying, especially since alot of the audio was seemingly used for the
massive amounts of speech. The voice acting is very good also.
Gameplay...this game could practically play itself. There is very
little to interact with. The only real interest to the gamer is the
pretty good battle system. You could leave that on automatic but then you
would be doing next to nothing in this game. I still haven't entirely
figured out the battle system, but I am able to fight and win
battles. Also, it is almost a guarantee that you are going to die alot in
this game. Some of the beasts are hard at first but fortunately,
experience isn't too difficult to build. All in all, there is very little
in the way of gameplay mechanics, which is a bit out of the
ordinary. Unless anyone is really interested, I'll spare the fine
details.
The quest itself, with the exception of the first half hour or so, is
pretty fun actually. There isn't all that much to do but everything
points to this being non-linear. I have been able to go pretty much
wherever I want and that's a plus.
Does anyone know if there is a translation of the manual out there? I
have had difficulties with some of it and have been too lazy to sift
through a kanzi dictionary.

Has anyone else noticed that Bonk looks suspicously similar to Dopey
from the Walt Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Perhaps
this is one of those "Separated at birth" things.
