I had the same problem when I bought an old Super
CD-Rom unit by itself for $3. The disk spun up but I
sometimes heard a scraping sound. Or else, sometimes
it spun up but it the laser couldn't read it and so it
said "please set disc".
One of the problems could have been an underpowered
power supply. I brought an adaptor to Japan from
Canada to power my games. It has a high current
(2000Ma) so that's not a problem, but it assumes 120V
power supply. In Japan it's 100V, so the power that
it delivers is too low for some of my consoles. So
for the consoles that I have here that take 9v DC,
I've had to switch the adaptor to output 12V DC to
compensate... After that my SCD-ROM drive worked
better... but not perfectly.
What I found did the trick was putting a regular audio
CD into the drive, and playing it. Then, I popped out
the CD, put in my game, and most times it would work.
So, maybe try these tricks. My SCD unit is old and
dusty, but it now works perfectly every time.
