Re: New Translation

That brings up a good question - and should start a nice healthy discussion.

Now obviously some games are going to be harder than others for 2 reasons:
(1) CDROM games simply have the capability for more storage (and thus more
to translate)
(2) some games will be more of a technical challenge, like having
compressed text and so forth

But what games would be on everybody's list of "wanted translations" ?

Sure it's easy to say "Ys 4" and "Legend of Xanadu" and "Far East of Eden",
but how about other games ? Even games for the PC-FX (it may be even
easier to translate these than most PC Engine games).

IDC's ? RPG's that weren't quite so popular as these (but still have some
attraction to you) ?
How about action games that can be played without knowing Japanese, but are
"missing something" without english ? (somebody mentioned Downtown
Nekketsu Monogatari the other day on IRC...).

How about desired HuCard translations ? (easier than CDROM)

Any games that you might want translated, but you're afraid to tell anybody
? (Mention any game... just don't say "Energy").

Hey... how about translations of english games into other languages
? Just a question.

Here's why I ask:
This would be one of my first translations, and I want to balance
difficulty against desirability.
Difficulty has 3 or 4 aspects:
(1) sheer size of game or script to translate
(2) technical hurdles such as compressed text
(3) space issues on the media - many PC Engine games do not support 1-byte
ASCII, and so English might need to be written in 2-byte SJIS. This makes
the english translation huge, especially compared to original Japanese. As
far as I know, PC-FX does not have this problem
(4) space issues on the screen. Some games like Neo Nectaris put
information on the screen in tabular format, in compressed kanji. English
is difficult to squeeze into that display area.

I won't know how hard a game is until I look at it... and I don't think I
want to look at every game in the collection. So I'll see what people
would like to see.
