Hyper Catalogue & Cheats!

Hi, folks. Chris here in Kitakami, Japan. I'm back
from a week-long vacation to Tokyo and Nagoya. Of
course, I went to Akihabara, my Mecca, to shop for
videogames. It was my first time ever in Tokyo, and I
was not disappointed. It is an amazing place.
Naturally, I picked up lots of great and cheap
videogames and CDs. :-)

One title that I got is called PC-Engine Hyper
Catalog(ue) CD-ROM. I think it was released with
PC-Engine Magazine by Shogakukan in 1993 or so. I'm
sure other people have it too. Nothing too special on
the CD, just cinema previews of SCD games, but the
Hyper Catalogue is great -- it's like bt's PC-E
Catalogue project, listing all released games with
game information, as well as an index of cheats for
almost all the games. I was surprised to find many
cheats in the catalogue that aren't listed in the
Turbo-List's cheats page. So, I'll write down some of
them.

My Japanese knowledge isn't too vast, so if somebody
else with the Hyper Catalogue can translate all the
cheats that are missing from the Turbo List's cheats
page, please do so. :-)

So, here are some cheat codes from the Catalogue:

BLODIA/Timeball - The password 10898 opens up all the
levels, but also if you hold down "1" during play, the
ball freezes and you can still move the tiles around.

Galaga '88 - ATS hold "UP" and press run, as listed in
the Turbo Cheats page. Apparently, on the 11th wave,
you'll get a white capsule giving you a triple
shot(?). And if you make it to the 23rd wave without
dying, you'll get a quadruple-shot from a capsule.

Golden Axe - There is a debug screen in this game.
When you boot the CD and the "RENO" logo is on-screen,
hold UP+LEFT+2+SELECT and keep holding them after the
screen dims. Release the buttons and you should now
see a cartoon girl asking you to choose. Select the
starting stage with the control pad, and you use the
SELECT button to choose either 3 lives or infinite
lives+magic (after your initial 3 run out). Press 1,
then select to select the character to play. You know
that you have infinite lives if the status bar in-game
is yellow rather than the normal black.

Mesopotamia/Somer Assault - Well, the sound test
listed in the TG cheats page is also a level select.
The first set of numbers says "ROUND" and the second
set says "SOUND".

Monster Lair - If you put in the same name in all 5
slots in the high score table, you can play the game
in "HARD MODE". I can't verify this.

Ninja Ryuukenden - In addition to the language select
code in the TG page, you can get 99 magic points after
continuing. Hold UP+1+2 at the continue screen until
you hear a tone. Another code: at the title screen,
hold DOWN+SEL+2+1 until the text at the bottom turns
blue. "MY CHARA" will change, but I have no idea what
this means.

Psychic Storm - ATS, move the cursor down to
"TRANSFORM".  Press "SELECT"; Hold "1" and press SEL;
Hold "2" and press SEL; Hold 1+2 and press SEL; hold 2
and press SEL; hold 1 and press SEL; press SELECT one
more time and you get an options mode, with credit and
stage select. Unfortunately, an invincibility mode
"muteki" is disabled...

Rastan Saga 2 - Kill the boss with time at 000, your
level goes up x2. I can't verify this.

Star Parodier - If you listen to "Sound 0A" in the
sound test, you can change the game level to "SUGEZE!"
- very difficult. Also, on level 1, if you use all
your bombs on the boss, he'll shoot a missile capsule
containing 3 1-ups. I can't verify this cheat.

Valkyrie no Densetsu - Put in "OMAKE"x4 as your
password, you start with a red suit and extra tools &
magic. Also, there's a sound test. Pause the game to
see the sub-screen and press UP+1+2. The magic meter
will show the song number.

Ys III (Japanese) - Enter (in hiragana) "YO SHI NO ZU
I" as your password. The game will say it is wrong.
Select "iie" (no) and/or push II to go back to the PW
menu. Then push "right" on the controller. There
should now be up to 90 save positions(!) as well as an
option mode that lets you play music and SFX, and
check/set weapons/items.
