I've got the exact same problem, on a turbo express.
I've taken the thing apart and found a few things:
Printed Circuit Boards and Ribbon Cables. (gee what a surprise!)
I suspect it may be:
a) dirty contacts on the ribbon cables (but alas it was not)
a') broken ribbon cable
b) broken soldering on a PCB
c) broken printed circuit board
d) broken amplifier?
I'm going to attempt to track the problem down with a multimeter. The thing
is, it seems to get louder after a bit of use, I'm pretty sure, once it
heats up a bit. Well, at least it's not the screen.
It seems this is a common problem, I wonder if anybody has a good fix before
I end up breaking the thing.
Additionally, the earphone jack seems to work a bit better.

This is my first posting, well, I hope I got it right.
