The 32X in general was a bad idea. At the time there was a widespread
belief around the industry as a whole that the 3DO (and to a much lesser
degree the Atari Jaguar which in late 1994 was recieving widespread
distribution at places like Venture, Wal-mart and other non specialty
retailers) would develop a large enough user bsae to be a factor when
the Saturn came out. In 1994 when the 32X was released in the US Sega
had already launched the incompatable Saturn system in Japan. Sega just
released the 32X as a distraction to consumers leaning towards investing
500.00 on the 3DO.
Within 9 months of the 32X's introduction in the US Sega had released
the domestic version of the Saturn effectively killing the Genesis add
on. Sega launched the Saturn earlier then their previously announced
launch day to get a bigger jump on the Playstation and to hold off 3DO
and Jaguar sales.
With regards to the 32X version of Doom, it was decent, but the Atari
Jaguar and PC versions of the title were much better. Much of this was
based on the limitations of the 32X, another part of it was due to the
general rushed nature of the 32X (and it's software) to the market.
