Re: Hu-Go vs. ME

A Dreamcast port would not be simple for several reasons --
MagicEngine is written using Windows APIs, and although a version of
the WinCE API was available for Dreamcast, it probably differs
significantly from the version of DirectX that ME requires. It
probably would be quite an effort to port ME to a platform which would
generate a small amount of registrations.

The Mac version is written with the standard, pre Mac OS X API...

A popular thing to do on Dreamcasts/Xboxes is to run emulators on top
of Linux for those boxes; which I hear Hu-Go! does excellently. Don't
count on a MagicEngine version though; I would imagine the codebase is
heavily Windows-specific (for example, recently the default graphics
driver was switched from OpenGL to DirectX--btw, test both drivers.
one or the other may work better depending on your config.)

I don't speak for MagicEngine; these are just my suspicions based on
what I know + some DLL traces I did awhile ago (out of curiosity).

Hu-Go! keeps on getting better, and it's very portable. Its
portability is its best feature, IMO.

Yame is Windows-only (although I swear I saw a linux binary version
somewhere) and no longer maintained, but is THE best alternative to ME
on Windows IMO--it's very fast, supports the CD formats and
SuperGrafx, and consumes less resources than ME. I use it when I am
playing PCE games on older machines.

Overall, MagicEngine is my personal favorite with Yame a close second
and Hu-Go! a good third, especially because it's open source + has
been ported to a -lot- of platforms. There are other emulators (I
think I used TGEmu when I had a Mac at home for awhile) but none
currently are worth mention...

Since I bought ME I think I can offer some constructive criticism--why
not finish ME 1.0 before putting a bunch of time into the PCFX
emulator? :-)

YMMV
