Turbo RGB mod

I have a problem.
I built the video amplifier shown on www.gamesx.com.
I used Radio Shack NPN switching transistors (sold in the 15-pack),
because I had no idea what was equivalent to the BC547 NPN (Jameco and
Digikey don't sell them. I also need a BC557 PNP for another project...
but no clue what equivalents are...)

Anyways, the picture is now black and white, and really dim. What's
more, the picture doesn't stay synced correctly. The opening of Soldier
Blade syncs, but the title screen and the beginning of the demo doesn't
sync...
Am I just using the wrong transistors? (The number on the transistor is
1802 NG51 -- 30V, 800ma, 1.8W, H(FE): 200, Silicon NPN, high-speed,
medium power)

The package DOES say "General purpose amplifier applications"...
Please help!

Also, what in the world does that whole 12V circuit, and the resistors
to GND on the RGB output lines do? Why is that part of the circuit
needed? Wouldn't it work just as well without it?

Thanks...
