You might want to check out the Apple II if you want to get into 6502
assembly. You can grab a //e or //c with monitor and disk drive (one is
probably all you'd need) for $30 or so these days, a //GS for maybe $60 (I
would prefer a IIGS but YMMV). Software is nearly-free, as is a lot of
assembler source. It has a built-in mini assembler if you want to hack hard
core yourself, and there are a lot of compilers all over the place. Check
out the comp.sys.apple2.* newsgroups and ask around, you're sure to get a
good deal.
