For side-scrolling beat-em-ups (ala Final Fight or Streets of Rage) Galaxy Detective Gayvan is one of the best for the pc engine. First of all, its 2-player, as all games of this type should be (unlike "Riot Zone"). Second, its got a very good amount of moves and techniques (unlike the simplistic "Riot Zone" and "Anesan"). In fact, your two characters even have "Street Fighter" like special moves! Very cool. The difficulty of the game is also high, which will keep you from blowing through it too quickly. Finally the game has a special 2-player vs mode, where you can select many of the characters from the game and is a nice bonus. This is a fun game, and along with "Double Dragon 2" one that beat-em-up fans should track down.
I really like this game! It is easily one of the best scrolling beat em up on a system lacking fighting games of this ilk. There are loads of moves to pull off with only two buttons, the game reminds me of Kaze Kiri in this respect. The game takes place on one plain , like Kaze Kiri and unlike Double Dragon II and Riot Zone: don't let this put you off, the fighting is really good fun, very addictive and the challenge is just right! The sound effects are great, loads of ounching noises ans screams and the bosses are preety good fun. The enemies do become a little repetitive, as do the samey cut scenes that could have been done better. The music is brilliant: the usual synth stuff that I love on CD-ROM titles. Highly recommended.
