One of the most incredible looking PC-Engine games using the Arcade Card. This game really pushes the PC-Engine hardware to its maximum. If you didn’t know it, you would swear that this game was running on the Sony PlayStation (which was already out along with the Sega Saturn). The game is not all looks, plays good too. The gameplay is rock solid giving shooter fans all they want, plus more. I would give it a perfect rating of 5, but because of its limited availability (only 5000 copies were made according to designer Mika Akitaka) I have to give it a 4.5.
If one was to judge the Arcade Card and the Duo for it's capabilities, then this would be what you would judge the system by.
You cannot believe how powerful the system is with this card until you see fluid animation on detailed polygons that use morphing techniques to transform from one object to another. This is how ever game using the card should have performed. This game came out during the time of the Sony PS1,and the Saturn, and seriously, was a contendor at the time.
It really goes to show you how far the NEC PC Engine CD Systems lasted due to end user happiness. If you make a great system, and keep making great games for it that just keep getting better and better, then why make a new system?
Killer music(but not as good as Lords of Thunder's),amazing graphics, great control, and a thorough joy from playing something that tells you that no matter how small a processor is,you can still tap it dry,and push it farther with add-on's,and peripherals.
Amen to the developer of this game, and to NEC fo
Graphics are stunning and top notch, but gameplay like its not the best of its kind. The game mechanics are not well balanced. It is an easy and short game but worth buying just for its technical aspects and its limited availability :-)
Game is absolutely incredible for what it pulls off graphically on the PCE. The graphics are not perfect though, some of them end up looking a little on the weird side being digitized polygon renders. Still a great game that doesn't quite live up to the hype. Not worth the price of admission unfortunately.
I am really a die hard Turbo Grafx/PC Engine fan since 1989 and I played many top view shooters from Zanac(NES),Blazing Lasers(TG-16)and Phliosoma(PS1). Sapphire is one of the best shooters I ever played. The graphics and sound is really great and its a little hard at time but thats o.k. Sapphire drop in 1995 and I finally got my hands on it 12 years later and its a bootleg but it was worth the wait. A real copy cost about 400 to 500 USD. The Game is good but not worth 500 dollars for a game that is 12 years old, that is PS3 money!!
The "bootleg" can be bought for around 60 or cheaper (if seller admits it's not the original) and is worth every penny. Finally got this and I've never seen a more incredible looking pc-engine game. The wow factor that I felt when first playing Lords of Thunder or Dracula X is outdone here- and two players at once, four ships to choose from and multiple kick-ass power-ups makes it that much greater. Soundtrack- while it's correct that it isn't as great as some of the LOT tracks- definitely feels like it could have been culled from a Thunder series soundtrack. The reason to get an arcade card- IMO.
Just bought a new edition bootleg of this game: looks like a new batch has been created?? Anyway, finally got to play one of the most revered shooters on the system...The Holy Grail, so to speak. Great (but typical) soundtrack. Amazing bosses and the action is fast paced. Far too short and unchallenging really, but the variety and beauty of the game will keep you coming back in my opinion. A game any collector of the system should track down and own.
