A rock-hard game to clear, but it's always (well, most of the time) very fair. Better graphics than the NES port. Also note the "cheat" to turn the cinematics into perfect english, so not even the story is lost.

In short: A PC Engine version of the NES game Ninja Gaiden. Fun yet very challenging ninja action game. Interesting story. A cheat code allows for English so no Japanese knowledge is needed. 1 Player ONLY. My personal gripes: Graphics are a mixed lot, sometime better but sometimes worse then the NES version. I find the sound and controls to be a little off too. I've played the NES version a LOT and this version just seems to chunk a little here and there. Not bad, but noticeable to anyone who has played a LOT of Ninja Gaiden on the NES.

Ninja Gaiden was one of my favorites on the NES- so I was elated to find out that the port of Ninja Gaiden for the PCE is based on the NES version. Background graphics are better- and though some gripe over the choppy parallex scrolling- it doesn\'t affect gameplay and I actually prefer it over having none. The character graphics almost seem like a step down from the NES version at times- but they work. I\'ve been playing the NES version again at my friend\'s house and I must say that this version (PCE) seems slightly better paced. Either his NES controllers were messed up or jumping from wall to wall in the PCE port is much quicker. 5 stars for retro love.

Generally I'm alittle offended when a console that was capable of being up there with the best 16-bit systems (even with just Hu-Cards, just take a look at Parodius or Street Fighter II')gets treated like this... A good use of the system's true power might have ended up in a pixel perfect conversion of the arcade machine... Alas, still a nice game!
