All time favorite RPG on the PCE/Duo side of things. Excellent story, excellent graphics, excellent gameplay. it's all here.
While not as polished in the music and graphics department as the Cosmic Fantasy series, Startling Odyssey II is still a lot of fun. Like the CF series, it features some ribald humor and great animated cut scenes. Also like Cosmic Fantasy, it combines technology, aliens and fantasy elements. I think deciding which series is better is mainly a matter of personal taste. To me, this game is a little less cute and more unpredictable. And Startling Odyssey II's main character is not named after a multi-passenger vehicle, which is also a good thing. :)
I had high hopes for this game, but sadly its just A really average rpg.The cinemas are best part of the game. And I also wonder why the main character wears A pink cape?.The characters and enemies are really goofy looking. My main complaint about the game is the graphics are really just average, besides for the cinemas. All in all just an average rpg.
This and Star Breaker, both by Rayforce, are my favorite PCE-CD games by a comfortable margin. The first Startling Odyssey was a cool 8-bitish RPG, but this is a serious notch over it in every department. It\'s really pretty for the system and just exudes pure mid-90s rpg charm, the music goes from great (the redbook audio) to okay (most of the PSG), the encounter rate isn\'t too high, the story is solid, the gameplay is all there... this is really your quintessial old school RPG, and I mean that in the best sense. Also, check out Star Breaker for something similar in a more sci-fi setting, as well as Miraculum on the PC-FX.
