Insane difficulty and a very slow pace. Your ship starts off very weak and requires many powerups before being somewhat useful. Of course when you die you lose them all. That with the fact that it creeps along at such a slow pace makes this a rather poor shooter in my opinion. It does have some nice things going for it, good controls, decent graphics to name a couple.
When I first played this I would have given it a two- it seemed insanely difficult and I couldn\'t beat the first level. A few weeks later I beat up on Section Z (the arcade version on Capcom Classics for PS2) at a friend\'s house- and then soon after that I tried it again- and once I realized that it played like a side-scrolling Section Z with forward shooting I did MUCH better. Don\'t ask me why- it just clicked suddenly- maybe much more wriggling involved and honed bomb spitting skills- I was then able to make it up to a sixth stage (I say \"a\" sixth stage because there are multiple sixth stages due to path picking- huge drawing point). The power-up situation isn\'t as bad as I thought when I first plugged it in- I love it now- I thought the same as the review above at first- but came to realize that small doses of power-ups ARE useful- you just have to get the hang of playing to see.... if you\'re a fan of Section Z (but- like me- feel that Sidearms lost the feel) then check this out.
