Blood Gear is an involving little adventure game with side-scrolling mech action scenes combined with overhead, town-exploration stages. The overall mix is not unlike that of the Exile series. The game begins with some nicely done cut scenes about a mech pilot whose life is thrown into disarray when his scientist buddies are murdered by an evil tyrant. All of the cut scenes feature great voice and music, although the playable parts of the game have only PCM tunes that are mediocre at best. The basic gameplay involves traversing a side-scrolling action level, destroying enemies to reach the next town or objective. The action scenes are well done, although not as graphically polished as, say, the Legend of Xanadu games. It also features a nice, gradual upgrading system for your mech that keeps you interested during the tedious parts. Overall, Blood Gear is a good game that suffers slightly from the lack of a fully redbook audio soundtrack.
